On 28 February, the 'China Family' 2010 Swiss Chinese and overseas Chinese Literature and Art Spring Festival evening took place in the city of Zurich. The Chinese Embassy's chargé d'affaires Mr. Sheng Tan and spouse as well as the Consul General Mr. Liang Jianquan attended the evening. An audience of 500 guests were gathered that night with overseas Chinese, Chinese travellers and Swiss people, who enjoyed themselves and celebrated the Lantern Festival together.

With the help of massive government stimulus action, China is now leading the world economy out of recession, according to a new OECD report. Already the world’s second largest economy, China could well overtake the United States to become the leading producer of manufactured goods in the next five to seven years, it says. The OECD’s latest Economic Survey of China says it will be important to ensure that government saving, now falling in the wake of the crisis, does not revert to its previous, excessively high levels. Public spending should be stepped up to support much needed social reforms in areas such as education, welfare assistance, pensions and health.

Volume of Computer Waste Leaps in Developing World [CN] [en]

A report co-authored by EMPA of Switzerland, specialty materials group Umicore and the United Nations University released in Bali on Monday by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) predicted that by 2020, e-waste from computers would grow by up to 400 percent from 2007 levels in China and South Africa. "This report gives new urgency to establishing ambitious, formal and regulated processes for collecting and managing e-waste via the setting up of large, efficient facilities in China," said Achim Steiner, executive director of UNEP.

International Execs Smile on Mainland Cities [CN] [en]

China's economic growth amid a global recession in 2009 helped catapult Shanghai and Beijing to the forefront of the most attractive cities for international business people, according to a survey of more than 500 top managers of multinational enterprises, which was conducted by the international accounting firm KPMG and Greater Paris Investment Agency. Shanghai has edged into the top five in several national surveys held in China. According to China's city competitiveness ranking issued in 2009, Shanghai was third overall, while Hong Kong and Shenzhen scored higher. Shanghai also appeared in the top 20 cities with the highest cost of living in the world.

Despite the diplomatic distance between Switzerland and China due to Switzerland giving asylum to the two Uyghurs, Swiss companies increased exports to China about 19% more in January compared to the same period last year. Whereas Switzerland could export less to the rest of the word, the exports to Asia remained stable. Furthermore Swiss enterprises established in China are optimistic for 2010.

The Swiss Pavilion at the Shanghai Expo promises to give visitors an uplifting experience, transporting them to a rooftop alpine meadow. China and Switzerland held their first study meeting on the feasibility of a Free Trade Area (FTA) in Beijing on Thursday, China's Ministry of Commerce (MOC) said in a statement on its website.
